Geographical note
The Kamchatka
peninsula is situated in the North-east extremity of Russian Federation.
Geographical coordinates: latitude 51-60 North and eastern longitude
155-175, the region occupies the territory of 47.000 square km and
stretches from North to South at 1.600 km. Within the bounds of
Kamchatka region the following territories are included: Kamchatka
peninsula, southern part of Chukotka, Karaginskiy Island and Commander
Islands. The extension of the coastline is 5.500 km including the
islands.
Two thirds of the region are covered with mountain-masses. Sredinniy and
Eastern ridges stretch parallel along the peninsula and separate Western
Kamchatka Lowland, Eastern Kamchatka Lowland and Eastern Volcanic
Plateau. Northern part of the region is occupied by the Koryak Plateau
and spurs and Kolimskiy ridge. Regional center Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy
city, seven administrative districts and Koryak Autonomous Okrug with
its four administrative districts make up Kamchatka region. The
population
of the region is - 411.100 people. 216.100 people live in the regional
center and 32.800 people in Koryak Autonomous Okrug.
The geographical location, the influence of the surrounding seas and the
Pacific ocean, the movement
of air masses determine the peculiarity and diversity of Kamchatkas
climate.
There are more than 200 volcanoes on the peninsula, including 30 active
ones.
Territory of the Kamchatka peninsula is one of the richest in the world
in nature and recreational resources.Thermal fields and mineral springs,
volcanoes and glaciers, the famous Valley of Geysers, variable and
mostly unchanged by civilization flora and fauna give a great
opportunity for the development of eco-tourism and sport fishing.
Presence of volcanic activity, mountain ranges up to 4000 meters high,
impetuous rivers and ocean rich in unique marine fauna cause an interest
to scientists, naturalists and tourists in Russia and widely abroad.
Kamchatka is attractive place for wildlife researchers and all those who
are fond of watching the wild birds, animals, rare endemic plants and
bio-diversity of untouched nature.
